When Netflix first started, I jumped on it! Finally, I could “rent” a movie and not rack up $30 in late fees because I kept forgetting to take the damn movie back. By that time, I basically never rented movies because of those damn lates. With Netflix, I could the movie for a month and they didn’t care one bit! Perfect for people like me. And it still is! Now that I have kids, I love that it’s very eclectic and easy to monitor.
If you were to look at my Netflix history, you’d see a very wide range of movies and shows:
- NCIS – we are all huge NCIS fans. I’ve probably seen every episode ever made at least once. It’s not over the top with grotty murder scene or sexually explicit scenes, but it has drama, romance, and humor.
- The Great British Baking Show – I have to say that this is the best cook-off show on TV. Maybe it’s the British garden backdrop or that all the contestants seem to deal with the time constraints stoically, but it’s relaxing to watch. The contestants also seem to truly root for each other. The American version seems frantic in comparison.
- To Kill A Mockingbird – I show this every year in my classroom. It’s a wonderful classic movie and Gregory Peck is inspirational as Atticus Finch. These days, you need to watch a movie about people who stand for what is right, even when it’s not going to win anything.
- Ratatouille – My kids used to love this movie. So much that I could actually get them to eat ratatouille without a problem while watching it. I still like to watch that aspirational rat cook his heart out. It reminds me that “anyone can cook.”
- Beauty and Beast – We watch a lot of musical theater too! We’re a bit far from a major city to just pop in for a show without also paying to stay overnight. That adds up quickly, so instead, we watch great casts perform on the “small screen.”
- Bring it On – my daughter is currently obsessed with anything cheerleader right now. It’s a stage. I hope.
- Any of the Marvel movies – I’d try to blame these on my son, but really, it’s me. Thor, Aquaman, etc. Do I really need to say more?
Other than those shows, my taste is very eclectic and depends on my mood. Some days I’m feeling nostalgic, so I’ll watch an 80’s movie or a folk music concert. Other days, it’s thriller. The one thing you won’t ever find is horror. I have no idea why people even find those kinds of movies entertaining… just, yuck.
I’m always looking for recommendations of what to watch. What’s in your Netflix queue?
