I’m not a natural early riser, especially as the days grow shorter. Once the sun rises after 7:30 a.m., my circadian rhythm and daily routine clash dramatically.
Coffee, the nectar of the gods, seems like my only salvation in the morning. I don’t even need the caffeine anymore; the aroma is enough to perk me up.
While I’m not fond of waking up, I enjoy the tranquility of an early start. I savor a slower pace, sipping my coffee while listening to the morning news or the neighborhood stirring to life, and watch the fog lift from the river. It’s a calming way to begin the day, allowing me to reflect on my tasks (often over-planning) and take a moment to simply exist. Sometimes, this quiet time is the best part of my day.

I always choose at least a dark roast, if not an espresso. The bitterness of the coffee perfectly balances the protein milk and a hint of sugar-free hazelnut syrup. I know I’m in the minority when it comes to coffee preferences—I’ve never been able to appreciate overly sweet, candy-like flavors. Coffee should be bracing to taste, like bracing to face the day.
After this ritual, I feel ready to tackle the day’s challenges and tasks.
How do you start your day?
