As soon as fall arrives, I can’t help but get excited about all the delicious flavors that come with the season. While pumpkin spice is everywhere, I love to embrace other warm spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice. These cozy flavors always put me in the mood to bake, and this year, I’ve been experimenting with a family favorite: spiced chocolate chip cookies!
This recipe has a bit of a checkered past in my family. My grandmother insists it’s hers, my mom claims ownership too, but the only one I remember making them is my aunt. Regardless of who gets the credit, we all devoured them like starving wildebeests!
What Makes These Cookies So Special?
So, what makes these cookies the perfect treat for fall? It all comes down to the spices! These cookies are packed with flavor, thanks to a delightful blend of cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg. The addition of applesauce replaces some of the traditional fat, adding moisture and a hint of sweetness while keeping the cookies soft and chewy.
The warmth of these spices lingers long after you’ve pulled them from the oven, creating a cozy atmosphere perfect for chilly autumn days. Whether you’re enjoying them with a cup of hot cider or sharing them at a gathering, these fall cookies are sure to be a hit.

These cookies are easy to make and you are going to be making them over and over!
Auntie’s Autumn Chocolate Chip Cookies
Ingredients:
4 c. Flour
1 t. each of Cinnamon, Cloves, Nutmeg, and Salt
2 c. Chocolate Chips
1 c. Margarine
2 c. Sugar
2 t. Baking Soda
2 c. Applesauce
2 Eggs
Directions:
- Cream sugar and margarine together.
- Add in eggs and applesauce and mix well. Then add remaining dry ingredients and mix thoroughly. (I used my kids’ applesauce cups since they’ve decided they don’t want them for lunch anymore. Funny, they have no problem with eating the cookies). The batter will be softer than traditional chocolate chip cookies.
- Drop into large rounded spoonful (more than 1T size) on to cookie sheet. Use Silicone baking sheets to keep them from sticking to the cookie sheet and get an even bake.(Totally recommend getting these if you are a baker, even if it’s only at the holidays. They make baking so much easier. Get them before Thanksgiving and you will thank yourself!) Bake at 350 degrees fahrenheit for about 15 minutes. The cookies do not spread too much, so you really only need to leave an inch or so between each cookie.
You can easily adjust the size, for your own needs. We like big cookies, so I make them on the bigger side.
