It’s fall! While pumpkin spice is popping up everywhere, there are other yummy fall flavors. Cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice! And all those spices put me in a baking mood. I’ve been making chocolate chip cookies, but I’m adding spices and apples, to make awesome fall cookies!

This fall cookie recipe has a checkered past in my family. My grandmother swears it’s her recipe, and so does my mom, but the only person I can remember making them was my aunt. And we ate them like starving wildebeests!

What makes them so good and perfect for the fall season? The main reason is the spices. These are fall cookies with a lot of flavors! Not only is there cinnamon, but also cloves and nutmeg. Plus applesauce is used to stand in for some of the fat that a traditional chocolate chip cookie would use. All of these give the cookie a warmth that stays long after they’ve been removed from the oven.

These cookies are easy to make and you are going to be making them over and over!

Auntie’s Autumn Chocolate Chip Cookies

Ingredients:

4 c. Flour
1 t. each of Cinnamon, Cloves, Nutmeg, and Salt
2 c. Chocolate Chips
1 c. Margarine
2 c. Sugar
2 t. Baking Soda
2 c. Applesauce
2 Eggs

Directions:

  1. Cream sugar and margarine together.cream butter and sugar
  2. Add in eggs and applesauce and mix well. Then add remaining dry ingredients and mix thoroughly. (I used my kids’ applesauce cups since they’ve decided they don’t want them for lunch anymore. Funny, they have no problem with eating the cookies). The batter will be softer than traditional chocolate chip cookies.fall cookie batter with chips
  3. Drop into large rounded spoonful (more than 1T size) on to cookie sheet. Use Silicone baking sheets to keep them from sticking to the cookie sheet and get an even bake.(Totally recommend getting these if you are a baker, even if it’s only at the holidays. They make baking so much easier. Get them before Thanksgiving and you will thank yourself!) Bake at 350 degrees fahrenheit for about 15 minutes. The cookies do not spread too much, so you really only need to leave an inch or so between each cookie. autumn cookies baking

You can easily adjust the size, for your own needs. We like big cookies, so I make them on the bigger side.

This is a really busy season, so I’m not always able to bake for my family. As we get closer to the holiday season, I’ll be putting in more baking time and sharing more cookie recipes!
